‘Pillars Shift Focus on League’
Nigerian champions Kano Pillars now have no choice but to realign their focus on the league, after failing to advance to the second round of the CAF Champions League at the weekend.
Pillars suffered a heavy first-round defeat against Morocco’s Moghreb Tetouan, leaving their Nigeria Premier League title defence as their only hope of silverware this season.
“We will focus on the league,” Pillars technical adviser Okey Emordi said.
“We will keep on training, restructuring – it’s just like in one’s family, there are good and bad ones. You keep on working hard to get better for the season and in the future,” he added.
“A lot of incidents have befallen the team in recent weeks. It’s rather unfortunate for us exiting the competition at this stage. We all wanted to achieve something this time, but it’s now impossible.”
Pillars lost the first leg of their fixture against the Moroccan team 4-0, although they did manage to hold their own in the second leg, winning 2-1. However, the victory was not enough to secure passage to the next round though.
“The players did well, I appreciate their impressive game in the second half, second leg of the game in Kano; if they had started well in the first half it would have been a different ball game,” Emordi concludes.
