Chukwuma Soludo has presented certificates of recognition to six newly elected traditional rulers in Anambra State, reaffirming the role of traditional institutions in promoting peace, unity and development.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Light House in Awka on Friday, where the governor urged the monarchs to prioritise good governance, the welfare of their people and community harmony.

Soludo said the event underscored the state government’s commitment to strengthening traditional leadership for sustainable community development.

“The office of the traditional ruler is a creation of the town union constitutions in most communities. These constitutions define the responsibilities of the traditional rulers,” he said.

He advised the monarchs to abide by their respective community constitutions to avoid conflicts, particularly between traditional rulers and presidents-general.

“We urge them to be the light and father of all, while encouraging communities to claim ownership and maintain the traditional institution,” the governor added.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, said the emergence of the monarchs followed due process in line with their community constitutions before being presented for official recognition.

He noted that the Public-Private-Community Partnership model was yielding results, with individuals contributing significantly to community development, adding that other states were adopting similar approaches.
