PHIA Strengthens Community Relations with Ipo, Omagwa Host Communities
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA), has deepened ties with its host communities of Ipo and Omagwa through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) engagement that underscores its commitment to safety, stakeholder partnership, and sustainable development. At a formal handover ceremony, FAAN presented CSR items, including 40 bags of rice, 16 gallons of vegetable oil, cartons of malt drinks, Coca-Cola packs, whiskey, and bottled water to representatives of the two communities.
The gesture was described as part of FAAN’s structured community relations framework, which recognises host communities as critical partners in ensuring aviation safety, security of infrastructure, and uninterrupted airport operations. The Regional General Manager (South-South), Mrs Lynda Ezike, was represented by the Head of Department, Public Affairs/Protocol, Mrs Ngozi Onyeanwuna, who conveyed management’s appreciation to traditional rulers and community leaders for their sustained cooperation and peaceful disposition.
She noted that effective community engagement enhances operational stability and promotes transparency in governance.
Dignitaries at the event included the Airport Manager, officers of the DSS, ACP Police, NDLEA, DACOS, departmental heads, the International Terminal Manager, former ITM, and HRH Eze Amadi, Paramount Ruler of Ipo Town. Community representatives expressed gratitude to FAAN, describing the initiative as a demonstration of inclusive leadership and responsible corporate citizenship. They reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful coexistence, protection of airport assets, and sustained partnership with FAAN in support of safe and efficient operations.
In his closing remarks, Mr Wisdom Ibeneche, speaking on behalf of the Regional General Manager, said CSR engagements are strategic tools for strengthening trust, promoting social inclusion, and securing FAAN’s social licence to operate. He stressed that peace, mutual understanding, and shared responsibility remain indispensable to protecting critical aviation infrastructure and achieving FAAN’s long-term objectives.
The programme ended with a closing prayer offered by a representative of the Omagwa community, sealing what was described as a cordial and strategically impactful engagement.
