Pharmaceutical society to rid Kano of fake, substandard and controlled drugs

The Chairman Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria Kano State Chapter Pharmacist Gali Sule has disclosed that the body in collaboration with the Federal Government has concluded plans to rid the State of fake, substandard, expired as well as controlled drugs which have become so easy to purchase in the open markets.

According to him, the uncoordinated distribution of drugs in the country has contributed significantly for decades to drug related offenses such as drug abuse due to availability of every kind of drugs in the open market, production and circulation of fake, substandard and expired drugs and Kano is ranked one of the states with high cases of drug abuse.

To curtail the menace, the Federal Government he said has set up a committee which has adopted national drug distribution guidelines which if implemented will check the menace of circulating such drugs in the society which is expected to commence on the 31st of July 2017.

He further revealed that the FG has concluded plans to establish drug markets in six centres across the country in places such as Kano, Lagos, Onitsha, Aba to be designated and approved centres where drugs can be bought and distributed in order to have a sanitized system and that all relevant stake holders such as NAFDAC, Police, Pharmaceutical Society Banks will all be found at the center.

He noted however that the fight against uncoordinated drug distribution in Kano which has contributed tremendously to cases of drug abuse is not an easy one considering the fact that the previous Kano State govt in a bid to control the problem placed a ban on the sales of drugs in the state’s market a development that resulted almost to crisis in the State and ended up in court. But that the Society this time around has adopted a civil method in which everybody concerned is been carried along and that maximum cooperation is been achieved.
