Association urges internet users to guard against cyber criminals
The Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (SCEAN) on Friday urged internet users to take adequate steps to guard against cyber criminals.
The President of the association, Mr Remi Afon, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
The cyber security expert urged people to be wary of the information they received online as they could be exposed to attack from cyber criminals
“There is a gap in Nigeria in terms of cyber security awareness. A lot of people just go online without knowing the dangers there.
“For the past three months, you‘ll discover a lot of defacing of even government organisations’ websites, which is just a tip of the iceberg of what attackers can do.
“One advice I can give them is that things are not what they appear to be. You’ll see a lot of information going online, a lot of lies flying about.
“You see people sending information to you, claiming to be their banks and you should click a particular link, supply information. People should be very careful of information they receive online.
“Apart from that, people that are using computers, laptops and so on and so forth, should make sure that they have a strong password.
“People that have e-mail accounts, should try to have strong passwords and change their password from time to time, update their antivirus and so on and so forth.
“This can really protect them from attack from cyber criminals.’’
Afon also urged organisations and individuals to show commitment to combating cyber crime, saying: “anything short of that portends huge losses because armed robbery is going out of fashion.
“People don’t carry cash again; they carry credit cards and debit cards.
“The only way they can steal money is online; so, people should always be conscious of that.” (NAN)
