Peaceful Protests Turn Violent in Umunnede, Delta State

A group of protesters, identified as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took to the streets on February 6, 2023, to appeal to the Delta State government to join other eastern states to observe the sit-at-home order in honor of their leader. According to them, the federal government had allegedly violated his rights by refusing to grant him bail despite a Supreme Court ruling.

Tragically, an attempt by the police to disperse the protesters led to violence, resulting in several people being severely injured, while some lost their lives in a stampede as they tried to escape an impending clash with the military and police, an eyewitness reported.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, stating that the police are working to arrest those responsible for the protest, which disrupted the peace in the state. He further mentioned that individuals such as Mr. Edaghosa Osasie, Emeka Ubani, Chuks chukwuasha ototo, Chris Okiro, and Kenneth Ukatu, among others, are allegedly sponsoring the group. Authorities are making tireless efforts to ensure that everyone involved in the unrest faces the full force of the law.
