PDP Lost Because It Took Electoral Success for Granted – APC Elders Council

After a careful review of the just concluded general election in the country, the Elders Council (Igbimo Agba) of All Progressives Congress (APC), Osun State has declared that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost to the APC because it took its previous electoral victories for granted.
Rising after a meeting held over the weekend, the council said the outgoing PDP government was successful early in its tenure but took its electoral success for granted as according to them, decadence, corruption and arrogance of power later set in when it predicted that it would rule Nigeria for the next 60 years.
Speaking through their chairman, Engineer Sola Akinwumi, the elder statesmen submitted that it was at that stage that President Goodluck Jonathan became contemptuous of and disregarded good advice while PDP leaders and members relished in lawlessness as a state craft.
They therefore warned the APC against behaving in likewise manner in order to allow what happened to PDP be their lot.
According to them: ”the electoral success we fought for has now been achieved. The advice we have to give General Muhammadu Buhari and other APC leaders across the country is that they must recognise that only a thin line separates success from failure.
“Adequate care”, the elders stressed, “must be taken so that success does not turn to failure. Success needs careful handling to stave off failure that stalks its every footstep. When success is in the bedroom, failure always knocks on the door to displace it”.
They demanded the enforcement of an all-out forensic war on corruption with strict party discipline from the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and leaders of the party.
The politicians who lauded all leaders who made the electoral triumph of APC possible called for a transparent and unsparing anti-corruption war that must take place across all political divides including the APC.
They warned that the two-pronged programme of anti-corruption campaigns and party discipline are needed to cure the nation of the tumour of decadence and indiscipline in political party system.
“General Buhari must wage total, unsparing and forensic war against the cancer of corruption which has eaten deep into the public and private facets of life in Nigeria. Nigeria’s incoming president must ensure that all those who have contributed to the economic woes of Nigerians through various acts of sabotage, fraud, embezzlement, misappropriation, misapplication, white elephant projects and outright stealing of public funds must not only account for, but also refund the proceeds into the coffers.
“We call for a forensic anti-corruption war using constitutional and lawful mechanisms of the state to enforce the existing statutes without recognising any sacred cows. Buhari must ensure that the war covers both the APC and the PDP and must be pursued to logical conclusion in Nigeria’s public life. This is the only way to justify the mandate Nigerians, against all odds erected on their ways, gave to our party on March 28, 2015”, they said.
Calling on the President-elect to save Nigeria from the cancer of corruption and indiscipline, the APC Elders declared that “we are your age mates and wish to leave a clean, safe, sound and rewarding Nigeria for posterity. Nigerians are in full support of the efforts to stamp out corruption from their country. That was the basis of the mandate which they gave to you and for which they rejected your opponents”.
While commending the State of Osun Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for his untiring efforts, the Igbimo Agba advised that those who have staked their all, particularly Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, to achieve the APC success must be rewarded.
Governor Aregbesola and his colleagues, they noted further, must be honoured for their patriotic shuttles and bridge-building efforts that have contributed to the achievement of a new Nigeria.
While calling for the enthronement of party supremacy, the Igbimo Agba counselled that all efforts must be made towards efficient management of the electoral success of the APC to prevent failure from setting in.
According to them, ”the electoral success we fought for has now been achieved. The advice we have to give General Muhammadu Buhari and other APC leaders across the country is that they must recognise that only a thin line separates success from failure”.
“Adequate care”, the elders maintained, “must be taken so that success does not turn to failure. Success needs careful handling to stave off failure that stalks its every footstep. When success is in the bedroom, failure always knocks on the door to displace it”.
Recalling that the outgoing PDP government was successful early in its tenure but took its electoral success for granted, the politicians stressed that decadence, corruption and arrogance of power set in the ruling party which began when the prediction of ruling Nigeria for 60 years became their sing-song.
The Igbimo Agba submitted that it was at that stage that President Goodluck Jonathan became contemptuous of and disregarded good advice while PDP leaders and members relished in lawlessness as a state craft.
“We have never governed at the federal level but now we are there. As Nigerians have trusted us with the mandate for the management of federal apparatuses of power, we require high level of carefulness, tact, wisdom and humanity to justify the confidence reposed in the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country”.
Management of success, the elders stressed, “is now the main thrust of our party’s imminent ascension into office. It is good that Buhari has shown that he is a straightforward person in declaring that PDP strong men should stay in their party and not expecting to hold top positions in the new administration. This is in spite of the fact that many of their dog handlers at ward, local and state levels at the local level have been defecting to the APC across the country”.
They called on APC leaders across the country to enforce party discipline in all situations from the top to the bottom levels and must be enforced from the centre to the state and local levels from the onset of the incoming government.
Igbimo Agba then called for a re-positioning of APC for efficiency and absolute commitment to public good at all times so as to avoid the banana peels that led to the electoral downfall of PDP.
