PDP Claims Gwagwalada as APC Retains AMAC in FCT Area Council Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the results of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing a major victory in Gwagwalada, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) triumphed in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
In Gwagwalada, the PDP candidate, Mohammed Kasim, was declared the winner on Sunday morning after a competitive race.
Philip Akpen, the INEC returning officer, announced that Kasim polled 22,165 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yahaya Shehu of the APC, who garnered 17,788 votes. Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) finished third with 1,687 votes.
“That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Akpen stated while certifying the results.
Meanwhile, the APC maintained its stronghold on the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). The incumbent chairman and APC candidate, Christopher Maikalangu, was returned elected after polling 40,295 votes.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) recorded a surprise second-place finish with 12,109 votes, while the PDP trailed in third with 3,398 votes.
According to Andrew Abueo, the collation officer for AMAC, the total number of accredited voters for the council stood at 65,676 out of 837,338 registered voters.
The results highlight a split in political control across the FCT’s key councils following the February 21 elections.
While the PDP celebrated its success in Gwagwalada, the APC has also secured chairmanship seats in other councils, including Bwari and Kwali, further consolidating its presence in the nation’s capital.
The election, which saw varying degrees of voter turnout, marks another significant step in the 2026 local administration cycle for the FCT.
