Pate: Tinubu’s Govt Spends N50bn on PHCs, Eyes Insurance Record

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, says nearly N50 billion has been disbursed to primary health centres (PHCs) nationwide under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) since 2023.
The BHCPF, financed from at least one per cent of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) and other donor contributions, provides a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS) designed to strengthen Nigeria’s health system and expand access to care.
Pate said the fund has supported the modernization of health infrastructure across all local government areas. He noted that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also disbursed more than N20 billion in the past two years for the rehabilitation and upgrade of 4,362 PHCs across 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, with similar projects ongoing in the south.
“From 2023 to date, nearly N50 billion has been disbursed directly to Primary Health Centers across the country, through the fund, with verifiably impressive results, and this has led to the qualitative modernization of health infrastructure across all local government areas of Nigeria,” Pate said.
He added that Nigeria is on course to surpass the 2024 record of 2.4 million citizens enrolled in health insurance later this year.
The minister further disclosed that more than 37 million visits were recorded at PHCs nationwide in the past two years, which he described as part of a “data-driven, process-oriented re-engineering of basic healthcare provision for Africa’s largest population.”
Pate linked the progress to President Tinubu’s Sub-National Health Support Plan, which seeks to strengthen collaboration between federal and state governments in health delivery.
