Panic as Apapa Residents Scoop Fuel from Overturned Tanker

A potentially catastrophic situation is unfolding in the Apapa area of Lagos State, where a tanker laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) has overturned on the Tincan Liverpool Bridge.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has sparked a rush by residents and passersby to scoop the spilling fuel, raising fears of a possible fire outbreak.

According to eyewitness reports, the tanker tipped over during the morning rush hour, spilling its flammable content onto the road and the area beneath the bridge. Rather than fleeing for safety, hordes of locals were seen gathering at the scene with kegs and buckets to collect the leaking product.

At the time of this report, emergency responders and road traffic management personnel had yet to arrive at the scene to cordon off the area or manage the traffic situation.

The absence of immediate official intervention has heightened concerns about the safety of road users and the scoopers themselves, given the history of tanker explosions in Nigeria resulting from similar activities.

Motorists are currently advised to exercise extreme caution when approaching the Tincan Liverpool axis or to seek alternative routes to avoid potential hazards and traffic gridlock.
