Over 1,000 Contributory Pensioners Protest Hardship in Osun and Urge President Tinubu to Intervene.
More than 1,000 retirees from the Osun State Contributory Pension Scheme protested yesterday, citing severe hardships faced by members.
At a press conference in Osogbo, key figures such as Alhaji Ayinde Toyeen (State Coordinator), Pastor Adepoju Sunday (Chairman), and Alhaja Abidoye (Chairperson 2) asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for help.
They lamented the dire situation of Osun retirees, claiming that many are in financial distress, with some dying on a daily basis as a result of a lack of access to medical care.
They said, “As retirees under the Osun State Contributory Pension Scheme, we respectfully ask President Tinubu to step in and save our lives.” The leaders emphasized the urgent need for intervention to alleviate the plight of contributory pensioners and urged the President to address the persistent problems at the local government level.
The payment of unpaid entitlements for retirees, especially those from primary schools and local governments between 2017 and 2026, as well as secondary school, tertiary institutions, and civil service retirees from 2020 to 2026, was the subject of their request for a peaceful resolution.
The pensioners emphasized, “We respectfully urge Mr. President to appeal to leaders and members of his political party in Osun State to cooperate in resolving these issues and help prevent further avoidable and untimely deaths among retirees.”
They expressed their determination to be law-abiding citizens and pleaded for immediate action in the interests of humanity, justice, and fairness.
They recognized and thanked Governor Ademola Adeleke for his significant efforts to alleviate the suffering of retirees in the state.
The pensioners acknowledged the current administration’s actions, which included paying 28 months of half salaries owed by the previous government, 12 months of half salaries to bonded retirees, and enrolling retirees in the State Health Insurance Scheme.
They viewed the ongoing payment of a N10,000 monthly palliative to each retiree as a positive development.
These interventions, they claimed, have provided much-needed relief and hope to many pensioners who have faced years of hardship.
