Osun, Assembly express regret over death of corps member in Kano

The Osun State Government and House of Assembly on Saturday expressed regrets over the shocking death of a National Youths Corps Scheme (NYSC) member from the state who died at the orientation camp in Kano State.

They expressed their regret in a separate press statement made available to our correspondent on Saturday.

The government, through a statement by the Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, said the death of Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo was unfortunate.

The statement signed by the Bureau’s Director, Semiu Okanlawon, noted that the youth corps member died at her prime after completing a degree programme with a bright future ahead of her.

It will be recalled that the 26-year-old First Class graduate of Transport Management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) died in Kano over alleged negligence by officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

She was buried on Friday in Osogbo, capital of Osun State where she hailed from.

The death of the corps member has however received several tributes from Nigerians all over the world.

The statement said, “It is most unfortunate this has happened. We are touched by the circumstances of her death. And we grieve this huge loss this sad event represents to her parents, siblings, other family members, the State of Osun and Nigeria as a whole.

“We can only pray that God the Almighty grants her immediate family the fortitude to bear this incalculable loss and rest her soul perfectly.”‎

On his part, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salam, said the parliament will conduct an independent investigation to unravel what caused the death of the female corps member.

In a statement  by his media aide, Mr. Goke Butika, the speaker said there would be consequences should investigation reveal that officials at the camp were negligent in attending to the deceased when she took ill.

He said, ” The parliament will wait for the outcome of the investigation of the NYSC headquarters, and will conduct our own investigation with a view to getting to the root of the matter.

“There  would be consequences for the death of the Osun State born first class graduate of Transport management from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, should investigation reveal negligence of the NYSC officials.

“I sent my condolence on behalf of the Osun parliament to the Oladepos over the death of young Dolapo who died at Kano NYSC orientation camp, and I want to assure the family that our parliament would certainly pick a bone with the NYSC on the matter until it is resolved in favour of justice for the deceased and her family.”

Also, the senate of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) lamented that the first class graduate was not well attended to.

The NANS Senate President, Salam Oyejide said, “The death of Ifedolapo Oladepo (Kano NYSC camp); and Ukeme Monday (Zamfara camp)  is too much to bear. It is painful and devastating. They just wasted another talent that could have also contributed enormously to rescuing Nigeria out of her problems.

“We commiserate the families members of the deceased and call on government to ensure proper punishment is unleashed on the erring officials.”
