One Year In Office: Bishop Ezeokafor Hails Obiano

As Governor Willie Obiano, the Governor of Anambra State marks one year in office on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor has described the governor’s 365 days as remarkable and eventful.

Daily Times recalled that Chief Obiano took-over the mantle of leadership from his predecessor, Chief Peter Obi on 17th March, 2014.

Bishop Ezeokafor, who stated this while interacting with journalists at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka thanked God for the gift of Governor Obiano and for instilling in him the zeal to work for the common good of the people.

The Prelate said he was more impressed as a result of how the incumbent administration has made Anambra a safe haven for local and foreign investors, even as he introduced a new bus mass transit scheme aimed at alleviating the suffering of commuters.

According to the Roman Catholic Bishop, the newly introduced Anambra Mass Transit buses would drastically reduce transport fare within the State to the benefit of the citizenry, if well managed.

On infrastructural development, Bishop Ezeokafor posited that the ongoing construction of three flyovers in Awka would accord Awka the much needed State capital outlook when completed.

Speaking on the issue of incessant increment in house rents, the bishop enjoined the state government to beam its searchlight on housing noting that if such gesture in transportation could be extended in building of new houses, house rent increase and other accommodation problems would be a thing of the past.

However, he urged the governor to reduce the number of persons in his entourage so as to save costs, because according to him, it was good for executive governor of a State to move about with so many people especially security personnel but with the meagre federal allocation accruing to the state this period of economic meltdown, there is urgent need for reduction of governance expenses.

On the possible means of decongesting traffic in the state capital, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese advised the Anambra State government to relocate the popular Eke-Awka market to more suitable site where the teeming traders would stand a chance of owning stalls noting that the present position of the market was no longer enough to accommodate the sellers and the buyers.
