Ohuabunwa-led PDP BoT meets in Abuja, moves to restore trust in party
The Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, faction led by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, met in Abuja on Sunday and pledged to help rebuild trust and strengthen internal structures in the party.
Speaking at the Life Camp residence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Ohuabunwa said the BoT would work closely with the National Working Committee to ensure that reforms already underway are completed and that party decisions remain guided by the law.
He said the goal is to reposition the PDP as a model of fairness and inclusiveness. Ohuabunwa said the BoT is committed to supporting the NWC in stabilising the party, adding that the reorganisation of affected state chapters is already progressing.
He said credible caretaker committees are being constituted to prepare the ground for transparent congresses and a future convention that will reflect the will of members.
According to him, the steps are part of ongoing efforts to rebuild confidence in the party’s leadership and processes. “We are going to work with this NWC, we are going to encourage them, we are going to support them to ensure that the right things are done, and that things will be done in line with the law and the guidance of our great party, the NWC.
“Like I said, we are also making meaningful progress in reorganizing affected states, including the Constitution of Credible Caretaker Committees, to prepare the ground for transparent congresses and subsequent convention processes.
“These efforts are aimed at building trust, strengthening internal structures, and ensuring that our party remains a model of fairness and inclusiveness in Nigerian democratic space.” He said Ohuabunwa reminded members that the Constitution assigns the BoT the duty of providing wisdom, stability and moral guidance.
He said the organ must help the PDP avoid divisive tendencies and preserve values that made the party one of the strongest political institutions in the country. This is as he urged members to act with unity and avoid actions that could weaken the party at a critical time.
“As the Constitution of our party entails, the Board of Trustees must continue to provide stability, wisdom, and moral guidance. Our responsibility is to safeguard the party’s soul, steer it away from divisive tendencies, and reinforce the values that have historically set the PDP apart as a disciplined and democratically established institution. In this defining moment, therefore, we must rise above sentiments and act with unity.
“Our duty is clear and well stated: to consolidate the reforms already underway, deepen internal cohesion, and ensure that the People’s Democratic Party emerges stronger, more virile, more united, and fully prepared for the leadership responsibilities ahead. I thank you all for your steadfastness, dedication, and loyalty to our great party. This is the time we should stand to be counted.
“BoT is the conscience of the party; we are the moral compass, and we wouldn’t want to behave or become complicit. We must stand and face the truth and ensure that this party stands to be counted at all times in our obedience to the laws of the Federation, the law of our party, and the guidelines of the regulatory body, which is the Independent National Electoral Commission. I want to thank you all for coming.” He said,
Ohuabunwa said the moment calls for leaders who are willing to put aside personal interests and focus on rebuilding internal cohesion. He said the reforms already in motion must be strengthened so that the PDP can emerge more united and prepared for national leadership roles. He thanked members for their loyalty and dedication, saying their commitment will shape the party’s direction.
He described the BoT as the moral compass of the PDP and warned that it must never become complicit in wrongdoing. He said the board must defend the party’s integrity by ensuring that all actions comply with the Constitution, the laws of the country and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission. He said this remains the only way the PDP can retain its identity as a disciplined and democratic party.
Ohuabunwa urged members to speak the truth at all times and stand firm on decisions that strengthen the party. He said the PDP must be counted among parties that respect institutions and internal processes. He assured members that the board will continue to act with transparency and a sense of responsibility.
The BoT chairman also acknowledged the challenges members faced in attending the meeting. He appreciated those who turned up despite short notice and travel difficulties. He said their presence shows their commitment to the party and its future.
He said the meeting would hold peacefully and expressed confidence that discussions would help unite members further. He wished delegates safe return after the session and promised that future engagements would build on the resolutions taken in Abuja.
“We are going to hold this meeting in peace, and at the end of the day, we also go back safely. We know that most people are still on their way, but still I want to appreciate those of you, irrespective of the short notice, the flights, and problems.” Ohuabunwa said.
