Ogun Police Deny Arrest Of Alleged Assault Victim Mirabel
A Nigerian woman, identified as Mirabel, has alleged that she was assaulted and raped by an unidentified attacker, claiming the suspect also sent her threatening messages after the incident.
In a viral video shared on social media, she said the trauma from the attack drove her to attempt suicide. The video sparked widespread outrage, sympathy, and calls for justice from members of the public.
Initial reports suggested the incident occurred in Lagos, prompting a response from the Lagos State Police Command and other relevant agencies. However, preliminary investigations later revealed that the alleged incident took place in Ogijo, Ogun State, transferring jurisdiction to the Ogun State Police Command.
Following the circulation of the video, rumours emerged online claiming that Mirabel had been arrested over alleged inconsistencies in her account.
Reacting to the claims, the Ogun State Police Command denied arresting the victim.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, in a statement shared on X on Thursday, said Mirabel voluntarily reported at the Ibafo Police Division on Wednesday, February 18, to lodge a formal complaint.
He explained that after a preliminary assessment, she was transferred to the Ogijo Division, the appropriate jurisdiction for further investigation, where it was observed that she was not in a stable condition to provide additional details.
According to the statement, she was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical examination and is currently being closely monitored, stressing that at no time was she arrested.
The command assured the public that the matter is being handled professionally and urged citizens to verify information through official channels before sharing.
