Obiano inaugurates water scheme, assures sustainability
Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state on Monday, inaugurated the first phase of the Otuocha Regional Water Supply Scheme at Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, with a promise to ensure its sustainability.

The water project is being constructed under a partnership arrangement with the European Union (EU) and the state government.
It would supply potable water to three communities in Anambra East namely Aguleri, Umuleri and Umuoba-Anam.
Obiano said the project which was the first of its kind in the area, would be reticulated to major streets in the benefiting communities.
He noted that the collection points had been mounted to enable the people have easy access to water.
“Individuals, who would want it reticulated into their homes should meet with the Ministry of Public Utilities for authorisation and proper supervision,” the governor said.
According to him, when completed, the second phase would extend supplies to eight other communities within Anambra West and Ayamelum Local Government Areas.
He urged the benefiting communities to take charge of the projects and ensure their adequate protection against vandalism.
The governor gave an assurance that his administration had made necessary provisions for sustainability of the water scheme.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne, explained that the water was sourced from Omambala River and treated for public consumption.
Ezenwanne said that the treatment facility had the capacity to treat 10 million litres of water daily with sophisticated complementary facilities to serve public interest.

The commissioner noted that the scheme was critical at a time the country was facing coronavirus pandemic, saying it would help in maintaining hand washing and other COVID-19 protocols.
Transition Committee Chairman, Anambra East Local Government Area, Mr. Obi Nweke, expressed gratitude to the governor for intervening over the pressing need for potable water.
He said the scheme would boost environmental health and promote wellness.
