Obasanjo Campaigns at Market, Says, ‘Let’s Do It for APC Again’
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid an unusual visit to the popular Itoku Market in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday.
His mission: To appraise the welfare of the people. He seized the opportunity to urge market women to ‘do as they did’ on March 28 during the Presidential elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) trounced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state on March 28.
Obasanjo, a two-term president on the platform of the PDP ditched the party shortly before the presidential election and openly embraced APC leaders.
He, however, pledged not to be involved in party politicking again but to operate as a statesman.
On Saturday, he was seen moving from one stall to another in company of his aides urging market women and men to peacefully vote for credible candidates during governorship election as they did in March 28 polls.
In undisguised support for the APC, the former president told newsmen when asked about his advice for the market men and women for April 11 polls that they should repeat the action of March 28.
“They should do exactly what they did last Saturday,” Obasanjo said, smiling.
Asked what took him to the market unannounced, Obasanjo said as a member of the community he had a right to visit his people especially in the spirit of Easter.
“Since I came back, I have not really visited any market. I have come to do two things. I have come to give them Easter greetings and to find out how they are doing in their market.”
“This is my community. As a member of the community, I want to know what’s going on and what’s happening in the community.”
