NYSC condemns assault on female Corps member by Anambra vigilantes

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has strongly condemned the assault on a female Corps member, Edema Elohor Jennifer, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, by operatives of a local vigilante group.

In an official statement issued by the NYSC Management, the organisation described the attack as “ridiculous,” and affirmed that it is taking the matter seriously.

“The Management of National Youth Service Corps has condemned the ridiculous assault on one of its Corps Members in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State,” the statement read.

The incident occurred when operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group reportedly stormed a Corps Lodge in Oba, claiming the premises were being used for illegal activities, a claim yet to be substantiated by any authority.

“Our findings revealed that a group of operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group forcefully entered a Corps Lodge in Oba, alleging that the place was being used for illegal activities which has not been substantiated,” NYSC said.

According to the statement, the vigilante operatives demanded to search every occupant in the lodge. During this encounter, Edema Elohor Jennifer, with registration number AN/24C/0626, who was only visiting the lodge, was allegedly assaulted.

“The operatives demanded that every occupant of the Lodge should submit themselves for a search, while Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer, AN/24C/0626 who was on a visit to the Lodge was assaulted,” the NYSC said.

Following the incident, NYSC confirmed that the matter had been escalated to law enforcement authorities for proper investigation.

“As an aftermath, the matter has been reported to the police while investigations and other necessary actions are ongoing.”

Reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on any form of harm or intimidation towards Corps members, NYSC assured that it remains committed to their protection.

“Management wishes to restate its strong commitment to the welfare and security of its Corps Members nationwide, and would not condone any individual or group of persons that undermines the security of her Corps Members for whatsoever reasons.”

The statement also called on the public and host communities to take active roles in safeguarding Corps members posted to their areas.

“Additionally, Members of the public are enjoined to provide adequate security for our Corps Members in all their respective places of Primary Assignment and host communities.”
