No More Term for Me – Jega

After successfully conducting two general elections within his five-year tenure, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, has said he would not serve another term.

Still basking in the euphoria of national and international accolades that greeted his conduct of the 2015 General Election, Jega who spoke in Abuja last night, requested that another person should be given the opportunity to serve after his (Jega) tenure ends in June. He added that he would not serve in the same capacity again, even if his tenure was  renewed

“I am grateful to God. I was asked to come and contribute my own quota to national development and I have done m bit to the best of my ability. Whatever assignment one will do for five years – just like this difficult one, to me, if one is able to successfully accomplish the task, someone else should be given the opportunity, because for me I am not interested and if I am requested to serve again, I will not do it, by God’s grace,” Jega stressed. Jega, who conducted the April 16, 2011 and March 28, 2015 presidential elections, admitted that the INEC assignment was a difficult and thankless  one.

Professor Jega, an academician was appointed in 2010 by then acting President Goodluck Jonathan who had sacked the then Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu following condemnations of his activities
