NLC to KEDC: Reinstate sacked 900 workers or face bigger action

By Ukpono Ukpong

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) over the mass sack of more than 900 workers, demanding their immediate reinstatement.

In a statement signed by its Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, the Congress described the dismissals as unlawful and pledged to escalate protests if the workers were not recalled.

While commending the affected workers for maintaining a peaceful protest despite provocations from KEDC management, the Congress reaffirmed its full support for their struggle, calling the mass sack a blatant violation of labour laws and due process.

However, the Congress has also warned that it will escalate protests if the company fails to recall the affected workers.

“We would want to commend the protesting workers of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company for peacefully conducting their strike action in spite of repeated acts of violation and provocation by the management of KEDC. Our hearts are with them in this heroic struggle against illegality and injustice.

“KEDC acted against the rule and process of redundancy. The sheer number (over 900 workers in one fell swoop) is equally mind-buggling.

“Accordingly, we call on the management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company to come off its high horse and toe the path of reason or dialogue by unconditionally recalling the sacked workers.

“This will ensure industrial harmony and restoration of services in its area of jurisdiction.” He said

The labour union dismissed KEDC’s attempts to justify the mass dismissal, arguing that prolonging the dispute would only invite stronger resistance.

Warning of potential nationwide consequences, the NLC stated that continued defiance by KEDC could trigger a broader sympathy action across the country. It declared its readiness to intensify the protest if the management failed to reinstate the dismissed workers.

The NLC emphasized that resolving the crisis swiftly was in the best interest of both the company and its customers.

“Resorting to self justification in a clear case of a faulty process is neither helpful nor reasonable. Prolonging this act of aggression clearly runs the risk of a major sympathy action.

“Congress will not hesitate to give the on-going action the needed bite if KEDC management does see the wisdom behind an early truce.

“For a start, we call on all affiliates in Kaduna to join the protest on a solidarity basis.” He said
