NLC to FG: 2026 must deliver justice, living wages, real relief for Nigerians

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that 2026 must deliver justice, living wages and real relief for Nigerians, warning that workers will intensify mobilisation to defend their rights and protect national unity.
In a New Year message signed by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC said Nigerians were entering 2026 with renewed determination, despite the economic hardships experienced in the outgoing year.
“As we stand on the threshold of 2026, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) extends strong solidarity and firm fraternal greetings to every toiling hand and every citizen burdened by the weight of our current socioeconomic system,” Ajaero said, noting that the past year exposed deep national vulnerabilities.
He said the challenges did not weaken the resolve of workers, stressing that the labour movement remains committed to national cohesion through equitable wealth distribution and social justice.
According to him, labour enters the new year “not with naive hope, but with a fortified resolve,” adding that commitments made by President Bola Tinubu for improved engagement were secured through pressure and collective action.
He noted that the NLC would engage government “deeply, consciously and patriotically,” while urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and patriotic as 2026 begins.
Ajaero said organised labour would only support governments and political actors who demonstrate genuine commitment to lifting citizens out of poverty, adding, “We must organise, mobilise, and hold every tier of government accountable.”
He warned against what he described as “mercantilistic politicians” whose actions worsen living conditions, stressing that such leadership must be rejected by the people.
The NLC president said mobilisation in 2026 would be “strategic and tactful,” driven by the collective interest of Nigerians and the need to secure lasting social and economic justice.
Addressing the rising cost of living, Ajaero demanded an urgent wage review, insisting that income must guarantee a decent life and not mere survival, in line with President Tinubu’s promise of a living wage.
He also emphasised security as a fundamental right, urging the government to consolidate recent gains and ensure the safety of lives and property across the country.
Ajaero however, called for unity and collective action, saying, “The promise of 2026 is the promise of our unwavering struggle,” even as he urged Nigerians to face the new year with courage, solidarity and hope despite looming challenges.
