NLC tasks FG to use recovered loot to rebuild Nigeria
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the federal government to develop Nigeria’s infrastructure with funds recovered from looters since President Muhammadu Buhari took office on May 29, 2015.
The NLC, while commending government’s efforts, said the “quantum of these recoveries vindicated our unqualified support for the fight against corruption and our insistence that more stringent punishment be prescribed for corruption cases.”
Ayuba Wabba, president of the NLC called on the Buhari administration to channel the funds into building roads, infrastructure, and reviving moribund sectors of the economy.
He said: “We believe, for the war against corruption to endure, as a people, we must be firm and resolute in our support for good governance and fight against corruption. We must entrench the culture of accountability, ensuring that public officers are accountable even out of office.”
The funds amount to N78.33 billion, $185.22 million, £3.51 million and €11,250. This was contained in the interim report released by the Ministry of Information on Saturday.
The report also stated that 158 buildings, cash and other assets in the region of N126.56 billion, $9.1 billion, £2.5 million and €303,399.17 had been recovered, in addition to the anticipated return of funds from foreign lands totalling $32132 million, £6.9 million and €11,826.11.
