NITDA: Google, Microsoft, TikTok shut 13.6m accounts under Nigeria’s digital safety code
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their compliance with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.
The agency said the companies’ efforts to align with the code, issued jointly with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), are part of measures to protect users from online harm and ensure safer digital engagement.
According to the report, 754,629 registered complaints were handled, 58.9 million content takedown requests were received, 420,493 suspended accounts were restored following appeals and 13.6 million accounts were closed or deactivated.
In its 2024 compliance report, NITDA said the platforms had made significant progress in addressing user concerns and harmful content.
“The submission of these reports marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment for Nigerians, as the platforms demonstrated their commitment to maintaining a secure and trustworthy online environment for all users,” the report said.
“Understanding the importance of the Code of Practice in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, the platforms have registered and highlighted their compliance efforts, making significant progress in reducing harmful online practices while enhancing trust and safety for Nigerians.”
NITDA, however, stressed the need for continuous collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen online safety mechanisms, promote accountability, and protect users against harmful digital content.
“While NITDA acknowledges these commendable efforts, we encourage continued collaboration with stakeholders, including civil society organisations, academia, and the private sector, to ensure the continuous improvement of online safety measures,” the report reads.
“The 2024 compliance report underscores the critical role of social media platforms in shaping Nigeria’s digital landscape and the necessity for sustained vigilance in Nigeria’s online safety ecosystem.”
The NITDA is a public service institution established by the NITDA Act 2007 as the ICT policy implementing arm of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
