NiMet Launches AI Research Team to Revolutionize Weather Forecasting in Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a bold step toward modernizing its services by inaugurating an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Integration Team, led by Director General Prof. Charles Anosike.
This multidisciplinary team, drawn from various NiMet units, will explore opportunities to blend AI-driven tools with traditional physics-based forecasting.
The goal is to boost the speed, accuracy, and accessibility of weather predictions, supporting critical sectors like aviation safety, agriculture, and disaster risk reduction.
Prof. Anosike, speaking at the inauguration, stressed the importance of internal AI capacity-building. “This initiative positions NiMet as a leader in technological innovation among government agencies, aligning with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda,” he said.
The team will identify global standards and best practices for responsibly integrating AI into NiMet’s operational systems.
The move complements NiMet’s ongoing modernization efforts, promising hybrid models that deliver more reliable climate services for national development.
