NiMet DG named African Public Sector Leader of the Year in Accra
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, received the African Public Sector Leader of the Year award on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the 2026 African Leadership Persons of the Year Awards in Accra, Ghana.
The honour recognizes Professor Anosike’s transformational leadership at NiMet, including strengthened climate services, advanced early warning systems, elevated aviation meteorology standards, and the agency’s repositioning as a key driver of national development.
The ceremony served as a high-level side event to the African Leadership Conference, themed “Reimagining African Governance and Development: New Pathways for Economic Transformation and Institutional Renewal.” The gathering drew heads of state, senior officials, development partners, and institutional leaders to discuss governance innovation, climate resilience, and economic transformation across the continent.
Organized by African Leadership Magazine—a premier pan-African publication and policy platform—the event promotes leadership excellence, governance reforms, and sustainable development. Its annual Persons of the Year (POTY) awards highlight leaders delivering measurable impact in their institutions and nations, uniting voices from government, business, and civil society.
Other honourees included President John Dramani Mahama (African of the Year), President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (African Political Leader of the Year), and Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane (African Inspirational Leader of the Year), alongside other continental figures.
Since Professor Anosike took the helm, NiMet has boosted operational efficiency and service delivery while emerging as one of Nigeria’s most digitally compliant government agencies. It now embeds transparency, automation, and data-driven systems at its core.
A statement by NiMet says, “this accolade underscores NiMet’s growing credibility and its vital contributions to climate intelligence, aviation safety, and national resilience”.
