NiMet boss advocates better use of climate information in agriculture

Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Sani Mashi, has advocated better use of climate information in agriculture in Nigeria to rebuild the sector and make it sustainable.
NiMet’s Head of Public Relations, Mrs Theresa Ushie, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mashi said that effective climate information and services would transform agricultural production from labour–intensive high risk endeavor to knowledge-based strategic enterprise.
He added that meteorological information would also help to ensure sustainable utilisation of resources to achieve food security in the country.
According to him, climate and weather variability play an overriding role in determining the amount of physical productivity of crops, livestock and forests as well as the risk of productivity failure.
“NiMet has been playing a crucial role in addressing the issues relating to climate variability and change, and the possible impact on agriculture production and food security in particular.
“The Federal Government should put in place National framework for Application of Climate Services, use of Information Communication Technology and enforce effective intervention policies, among others,’’ he said.
