Staff of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), on Tuesday, took to the streets, in Abuja, in protest against an alleged plan by the agency to retrench over 1,000 staff members.
The aggrieved workers shutdown the headquarters of the commission in Abuja, barring people who either wanted to collect their National Identity Cards, or register from accessing the office.
The workers vowed to keep the place under lock and key, until the retrenchment exercise is reversed.
The Secretary of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Isaac Ojemhenke, criticized the management of the commission for the planned exercise, while the FCT chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Aliyu Musa, bemoaned the working conditions of workers in the commission.
