Dr. Bright Enabulele, Accord Party’s candidate in Edo State’s just-concluded gubernatorial election, has unequivocally labeled Nigeria’s independence celebration as a “sham.”
Enabulele made this remark as Nigeria marked her 64th Independence Day.
Addressing journalists during a media parley in Benin City, Edo State, Enabulele expressed profound discontent with the current state of the Nigerian economy, asserting that the nation remains ensnared in a cycle of dependency on international financial institutions, specifically the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
“While we gather to commemorate our independence, we must critically ask ourselves: what are we truly celebrating?” Enabulele queried. “Our reliance on these foreign entities for financial support starkly reveals a troubling reality: we are still not in control of our economic destiny.”

He characterised this situation as a form of “economic servitude,” arguing that Nigeria’s dependence on external funding has undermined national sovereignty and hindered meaningful progress.
“It is unacceptable that, over sixty years after gaining independence, our policies are still dictated by foreign interests,” he stated, emphasising the urgent need for a radical shift in Nigeria’s economic strategies.
Enabulele further lamented the persistent issues of inflation, unemployment, and widespread poverty, which, he contends, have created a sense of disillusionment among Nigerians.
“The average citizen feels the weight of these economic burdens daily,” he remarked. “We cannot celebrate freedom when so many are shackled by financial despair.”
Calling for a comprehensive reevaluation of the nation’s economic policies, Enabulele urged citizens to advocate for initiatives that foster local industries and promote sustainable growth.
“True independence is not just about political freedom; it requires economic empowerment and self-sufficiency,” he asserted.
