Nigeria’s democracy, second largest worldwide, says INEC Chairman

…Assures Cameroun of technical assistance over poll

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, said that Nigeria has one of the most sophisticated and largest biometric register in the world made up of 70 million voters.

He thus stressed that the nation’s democracy is poised help to nurture other younger democracies across the globe, particularly in Africa.

The INEC Chairman spoke yesterday when he played host to an eight-man delegation from Cameroun who him a visit at the INEC headquarters in Abuja preparatory to 2017 presidential election in Cameroun.

He said Nigeria had undertaken both the general and continuous voter registration which have subsequently led to the production of Smart Card Readers (SCR) that were distributed to the individual voters in the 774 local governments and the FCT.

Yakubu assured the Cameroonian delegation that Nigeria would be willing to give their country the necessary technical support to enable them succeed in their forthcoming presidential election in Cameron.

Such technical assistance, he said, has become necessary given the proximity between the two countries.

The INEC chairman told the delegation that “Nigeria’s presidential democracy is second largest in the world, coming after America.”

He further told the delegation that apart from the voter registration, the INEC also undertakes the function of voter education which it performs to acquaint and carry along the electorate in the entire process.

Earlier in his remark, the leader of delegation, Mr. Mewoand Erick, who is the Assistant Director Communication and Publicity in the Cameron’s electoral body, had called for technical support in the clean-up of the country’s voters register, voter registration and distribution of voters card.
