Nigerians call out Buhari’s aide for supporting Death sentence for blasphemy

A great number of aggrieved Nigerians are currently setting social media ablaze following the emergence of a social media post made by one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s aides, where-in he purported to be in support of the death sentence for persons found guilty of blasphemy.

Mr Bashir Ahmad, who is President Buhari’s Personal Assistant on new media had on July 1st, 2015 aired his view as to what punishment should be tagged to blasphemers when he tweeted

“I cant pretend or keep silent. I support the death penalty for BLASPHEMY. That’s my belief and I do not and will never support”.

While Mr Bashir may have felt that his comments had been eroded off by the mists of time, Nigerians have now unearthed his contentious view and are firing at the President’s aide from all directions.

The attacks on Mr Bashir comes in the light of recent events, particularly with regard to the sentencing of 22-year-old Yahaya Sharif to death by hanging in Kano yesterday.

Many Nigerians, who view such ruling as Draconian and in breach of one’s fundamental right of expression have taken to their social media handles to vent their fury on Mr Ahmad who obviously appears to be in support of the court decision.
