NGO Urges Oyo Ministry of Justice to Strengthen Legal Protection for Persons with Disabilities

The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has urged the Oyo State Ministry of Justice to provide stronger legal protection for persons in the state.

The Programme Officer of CCD, Ms Christiana Njoku, made the appeal during an advocacy visit to the ministry in Ibadan.

Njoku said civic space rights remain the foundation of inclusive governance, stressing that without adequate protection, persons with disabilities would remain vulnerable and unheard.

She called on the ministry to establish a dedicated legal support desk to handle cases involving civic rights for persons with disabilities.

According to her, there is a need to ensure free and speedy legal representation for physically challenged persons who are harassed, attacked or unlawfully detained.

Njoku also advocated a formal partnership with the Office of the Public Defender to prioritise cases affecting persons with disabilities.

She emphasised the importance of training justice sector officials on civic rights and disability inclusion to strengthen policies that protect vulnerable groups.

Njoku noted that civic actors with physical challenges often face harassment, intimidation, institutional neglect and communication barriers.

Are stated that several persons with disabilities currently serve as desk officers in government offices, adding that they are given opportunities to participate in governance.

She assured that the ministry would review the requests and consider areas where improvements could be made.

Also speaking, Mr Musa Akinsawe, who represented persons with disabilities, appreciated the state government for the inclusion extended to them. He, however, appealed for increased support and greater inclusion in governance and other key sectors.
