New students charged to be of good conduct

Vice chancellor, Benue State University, Prof. Moses Msugh Kembe has charged the newly matriculated students in the university to be of good conduct and shun acts capable of tarnishing the image of their respective families, communities and the institution.

Prof. Kembe gave the charge at the 26th matriculations and oath taking ceremony of the Benue State University Makurdi, Friday.

The matriculation, the Vice Chancellor said marks the formal conferment of student status on the freshers.

“Today’s occasion is, therefore, a realization of your dreams of becoming students of the university and this, no doubt, will ever remain indelible and green in your lives and that of your parents, guardians and relations”.

At the ceremony, over 5000 students were matriculated into the faculties of Arts, Education, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Science, Social Sciences and College of Health Sciences.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that, “in our university, we not only ensure but insist on quality assurance in the minimum admission requirements and processes”.

In keeping with the above, whereas the current Joint Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s UTME cut-off mark for placement into undergraduate programmes of Nigerian Universities is 120 points, we have maintained ours at 180 points.

For ordinary national diploma (OND), National Certificate of Education (NCE), we have maintained the minimum entry requirement into our undergraduate programmes at upper credit, 9 points and 7 points respectively”.

Prof. Msugh Kembe said the university’s post UTME minimum scores for placement into programmes of the institution are 30% for science courses, 40% for Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Environmental Sciences and 50% for Law and Medicine.

He pointed out that the University is not only committed to quality assurance, but also moulding students in character and learning which is the basis for awarding degrees to deserving students in Benue State University. He therefore enjoined the students to earn grades by studying hard and be of good behaviour.

Entreating the new students to abide by the spirit of the matriculation oath and focus on their studies, the VC urged them to set high standards for themselves and aim at academic excellence.

He advised the students to imbibe the culture of patience and dialogue which are central to resolving disputes in all civilize societies.

“As you join the membership of your student union, play the game by the rules, follow the prescribed official channels of communication, avoiding unwarranted and ill-motivated protests, shunning all forms of violence, and securing the university property especially hostels and lecture halls from vandalisation”, Prof. Kembe said.

The Vice Chancellor said, “I hope to reposition the university as an information and communication technology-driven centre of excellence impacting on the state and national development by producing cutting-edge innovation and training manpower capable of competing anywhere in the world.

And to deploy all the available human and material resources at the disposal of the university to its growth and development as well as giving quality education in line with the mandate, vision and mission of the university”.
