NESG Seeks Buhari To Sign NEDC Bill
The Northeast Support Group (NESG) on Monday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, sign the North East Development Commission (NEDC) bill into law.
A member of the planning committee of the non-governmental organization, Hon. Salisu Sabo who spoke on behalf of the group, said there was an urgent need to rebuild the Northeast and also revive the economy of the six states for the benefit of its citizens which cannot be achieved until the NEDC come to fruition.
Sabo said for the North East to actualize its dream of reviving the region from the ravages of insurgency and save the future of the region and future generation, all hands must be on deck to see to the establishment of the NEDC.
He pointed out that with the establishment of the Commission, international organizations, humanitarian agencies and philanthropists can have a platform through which they can come in and channel their interventions for the region.
“If signed into law, the NEDC will have the capacity to mobilize more international funding and technical expertise that is grossly inadequate at the moment,” Sabo said.
While acknowledging the tremendous effort of Speaker Yakubu Dogara and his colleagues for sponsoring and spearheading the passage of the bill, Sabo noted that a lot more needs to be done to fast tract the signing of the bill into law.
The group also commended the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government under President Mohammadu for what it described as “concern and steadfastness” in tackling the menace of insurgency in the North East.
