NDLEA seizes 544.53kg illicit drugs in Anambra


The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra state said it seized illicit drugs weighing 544.5248 kilogram between January and February 26.
Briefing journalists yesterday in Awka on Wednesday, the new NDLEA Commander in the state, Mohammed Idris, gave the records of activities of the command since his arrival in the state.
Idris said the command’s record shows that more than 426 kilogram of illicit drugs was seized by the command throughout the year 2019.
He told journalists that a total of 45 suspects including 42 males and three females were arrested in connection with the illicit drugs.
“The weight of the illicit drugs seized are, cannabis sativa, 224.152kg; cocaine, 0.0464kg and heroine (0.0046kg). Psychotropic substances include crystalline meth, 0.0052kg; broncleer with codeine syrup 320.0kg, tramadol, 2.180kg and Rapnol, 1.540kg,’’ he said.
The NDLEA official further said that his command secured five convictions and filed 13 new cases at the Federal High Court, Awka, while 149 cases are pending in court.

He said 23 drug addicts are currently undergoing counselling and rehabilitation at the agency’s facility in Onitsha.
Responding to questions from journalists, Idris attributed the success recorded within the short period to God and the good working relationship among his staff.
Also, he said that re-strategizing in intelligence gathering methods and the proximity of the state to Delta state, which is a known cannabis producing area contributed to the reason behind the large quantity of drugs confiscated by the command.
