NDLEA nabs Somali national, others in Kano
…Raises the Alarm over new drug in town
The National Drugs and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Command has arrested a Somali, Muhammed Abdullahi, for importing 50kg suspected dried weed known as KHAT into the state.
Parading the suspect before news men on Thursday at the Command Headquarter in Kano, the Commander, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul said that, the drug pusher fell into the traps of his men due to meticulous methods put in place by the Command to checkmate activities of drug barons in the state.
Abdul revealed that the exhibit which contains Tetra -Hydeo Canabinol was carefully packaged with the label of Moringa, a guise which he said was well orchestrated in order to deceive the men of the agency.
According to him, the substance is new in the country and all hands must be on deck to ensure that it is prevented from getting to the public at a time the agency with its sister agencies are working hard to rid the state of drug abuse.
Furthermore, he said, considering the electoral period, the Command has identified and carried out raids in 45 hot spots across the state where hard drugs are being sold and consumed and a total number of 105 suspects have so far been arrested.
Items confiscated by the Command during the period under review include: 872kgs of Cannabis Sativa, 715kgs of psychotropic substance, 400grams of cocaine. Others include: Heroine 120 grams as well as 50kg of Khat bringing the total to: 1637.520kgs.
However, he called on the general public to be on the lookout as new methods of supplying such drugs which have destroyed the lives of many have been introduced and unsuspicious persons are being deceived into taking them.
He said that the Command would charge the suspect and others in their custody to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
Abdul warned the public especially politicians to desist from using the youths as thugs and supplying drugs to them as well as using their premises for committing drug offenses as the Command would not hesitate to arrest anyone violating the NDLEA Act which attracts not less than 15 and more than 25 years jail terms.
