NCC wants DBI to become Nigeria’s first ICT University

Indications have emerged that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) may be mulling the idea of transforming the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) to a full University.
DBI was established in 2004 and modelled after similar ICT Universities and institutions across the world.
Mr. Sunday Dare, NCC’s Executive Commissioner made this remark recently, at the Beacon of ICT Distinguished Lecture/Awards Series 2017 held in Lagos.
“DBI, with campuses in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Enugu, is modelled after similar ICT Universities and institutions and might be in its way to becoming Nigeria’s first ICT University,” Dare said.
He highlighted NCC, will through the Digital Bridge Institute provide education in telecommunications and IT spheres, stressing that with the infrastructures at the various campuses, the institution is well positioned to offer basic courses in telecommunications.
Daily Times gathered that DBI’s ADAPTI programme has substantially improved the IT skills of many students, public civil servants and members of the private sector and has trained 6000 since its establishment.
It was also gathered that the institution was established after acknowledging the need to continue to foster the rapid development and growth of the Nigerian Telecommunication marketplace, as well as the potentially significant vulnerability as lack of human resources could pose in the ICT industry.
Currently, DBI is seen as a world-class center of excellence in Telecommunication and Information Technology training and education.
