National Water Resources Information System centre commissioned in Abuja
The Federal Government has established a National Water Information System (NAWIS) Centre at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Abuja to help facilitate water resources planning and development.
Performing the commissioning ceremony, over the weekend, in Abuja, the minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu, has commended the World Bank’s efforts in establishing these centres across the country.
Adamu said that “the establishment of these NAWIS centres in the headquarters and the six geo-political zones will greatly support our policy formulation and development in the water sector and facilitate efficient water resources planning, development, and management in the country.”
These centres will also promote research development and innovation in the water sector and positively impact on socio-economic development in the country.
He said that the cumbersomeness in data availability and accessibility, which hitherto has been the case, would be adequately addressed while personalization of information would be discouraged.
The Director of Water Supply, Engr. Benson Ajisegiri, said that the project which was initiated three years ago with a clear data production
and management objectives among others, would provide credible and timely data for planning, design, construction and operation of water projects, as well as the assessment of project environmental impacts.
It would also facilitate direct communication in the Ministry’s Headquarters office, the four Agencies and its twelve River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) for enhanced availability and accessibility of real-time water resources data and information.
