Nasarawa needs N40bn to clear backlog of pension, gratuity -Sule

Over N40 billion is required to clear the backlog of pension and gratuity of retired civil servants in Nasarawa state.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, made this known to newsmen at a media chat held at Government House on Thursday, to mark his one year in office.

He said that his administration was committed to the welfare of pensioners in order to improve on their standard of living.
He said: Over N40 billion is needed by the state government to clear the backlog of gratuity to pensioners in the state. I am having that in my mind as we are hoping and praying that we will have money to pay.
“My wish is to commence the payment of gratuity as it is a huge liability to the state. it is not only Nasarawa state that is having the challenge, but the country at large.”
Gov. Sule, who tasked the 13 local government chairmen to look inwards in order to improve on their internally generated revenue for the overall development of their councils.
“For the state workers, we are paying 100 per cent to both the civil servants and pensioners.

“For the local government civil servants, as we are all aware that there is an autonomy in the local government.
”On percentage payment, I cannot direct the local governments, but I can only work with them to address some issues affecting local government councils in the state,
”The truth is that they don’t have the money, but I will continue to partner with them towards improving on the standard of living of local government staff, ” he added.
The governor assured the people of the state of his administration’s determination to continue to key into positive policies and programmes that would have direct bearing on the lives of the people.
