NAMA Commences Calibration Of Navigational Aids

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) said it had commenced the calibration of its navigational aids at airports and en-route stations across the country.

In a statement by the NAMA General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Olajumoke Adetona, on Wednesday in Abuja, she said that the exercise would involve the calibration of the agency’s Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Very High Omni-Directional Radio Range (VOR) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME).

Other facilities to be calibrated include the Path Approach Precision Indicators (PAPI), Air Field Lighting Systems and Communication Radio Coverage across the nation.

It said that the routine calibration exercise was intended to determine the precision and accuracy of the navigational aids.

According to the statement, the exercise is being handled by the Agency for the safety of Aerial Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) of Senegal in collaboration with the agency’s engineers.

It added that the exercise was expected to last for about two weeks.

“The routine calibration exercise intended to determine the precision and accuracy of these navigational aids,’’ it said.

The statement also quoted NAMA’s Managing Director, Mr Ibrahim Abdulsalam, saying that the operation is targeting at putting all the navigational aids in optimal capacity.

“Abdulsalam said the exercise was also in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards to generate precise and accurate signals to guarantee the safety of air navigation,” it said.
