NAHCON calls for improved media coverage of hajj activities
Alhaji Abdullahi Mohammed, Executive Chairman, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), on Friday called for improved media coverage of the core hajj activities during the forthcoming 2017 hajj operations.
Mohammed made the call when he visited the Director-General of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Dr Mansur Liman in Abuja.
He emphasised the importance of bringing to the public the hajj activities at Muna and Arafat which formed the core hajj period.
“I believe it is very important we strengthen that because it is the highest moment of all fears as the maximum risk period for the hajj.
“So, whatever we can do to bring out what is happening at Muna and Arafat to the families of the pilgrims, I believe it will really help.
He proposed that NAHCON and FRCN should set up a strategic thinking committee that would review and strengthen their partnership in order to engage the pilgrims through FRCN programmes.
The NAHCON chairman also advocated for pilgrims education programme that would be all year round, adding that preparation for hajj was an all year affairs.
“You don’t prepare for hajj within a week or else, you are only planning to fail, but we plan for a whole year.
“The process of the one year planning needs to be put in public domain so that both the pilgrims and members of the public will get to know what NAHCON is doing.
“I want to appeal that we change our weekly programme to an annual one and most especially in major Nigerian languages that people listen to and understand.
“Particularly in Hausa, Kanuri, Yoruba, Igbo, Fulfulde because majority of the pilgrims can conveniently or effectively communicate in one of these languages,” he said.
Responding, the FRCN boss, assured the commission that the corporation would ensure an improve coverage of the 2017 hajj and NAHCON activities in general.
Liman said that FRCN would continue to do it best to add value to its existing partnership with NAHCON for the benefits of all Nigerians.
He commended the leadership of NAHCON for reforming hajj operation in the country, saying, “There is a lot of improvement on hajj activity since Mohammed assumed leadership of the commission.”
