Mubi blasts: Senate tasks security agencies to secure lives, property in Adamawa
The Senate on Wednesday urged the security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and properties in Mubi town in Adamawa and entire state, following last Week’s twin bomb blast by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
The Senate took this position after adopting a motion titled, “The twin bomb blast in Mubi and the need for immediate action to prevent recurrence”, sponsored by Senator Binta Masi-Garba (APC Adamawa North) during plenary.
It called on the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) and the Presidential Committee on North East Initiative, PCNI to urgently provide relief materials to the affected community as directed by the vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
The Senate also urged the National Orientation Agency, NOA; traditional councils and local governments to intensify enlightenment campaign and synergy between the security agencies and traditional institution for adequate security in the Adamawa North senatorial district.
It, asked its Committee on Security and National Intelligence to monitor the implementation of the resolutions.
In his remarks on the motion, Senator Masi-Garba, told the Plenary that two suspected suicide bombers had on Tuesday, May 1 “shattered the relative peace in Mubi and environs through a twin bomb explosion at a mosque within the popular second-hand clothes market known as Kasuwan yan Gwannjo”.
She said, “Over 29 innocent people were officially confirmed dead, but the grave diggers said they buried 85 people and 50 others were hospitalized and some in critical conditions, while properties worth millions of naira also destroyed”, she added.
Senator Binta said, the recent attacks have seriously brought back fears not only in Mubi, but the entire Adamawa North Senatorial District, adding that “this will definitely affect businesses of the area especially Mubi being a commercial centre of the state”.
She commended the state government, the Mubi South and Mubi North local government councils for immediate evacuation of victims and providing medical services for injured victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
She also praised the vice president for directing NEMA to provide relief materials to the victims and the visit of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai to Mubi to assess the security situation in the town.
In his contribution, Senator Olugbenga Ashafa (APC Lagos East) lamented the constant killings of innocent people every day across the country and emphasized the need to compel the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to appear before the senate for explanation on efforts of the security agency in addressing the problem.
