‘Money Laundering’: Ex-Accountant-General Nwabuoku’s Case will be Decided by the Court on April 13.

The trial of Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, the former acting accountant-general of the federation, for alleged N868 million money laundering is set for April 13 at a federal high court in Abuja.

After Norrison Quakers, the defendant’s attorney, and Ekele Iheanacho, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) counsel, adopted their final written addresses, presiding judge James Omotosho fixed the date on Monday.

Nwabuoku is on trial for N868 million in a nine-count amended charge of money laundering. He was given N500 million in bail, along with two equal sureties.

The anti-graft agency claimed in the charge sheet FHC/ABJ/CR/240/2024 that Nwabuoku colluded with a number of businesses, including Temeeo Synergy Concept Limited, Turge Global Investment Limited, Laptev Bridge Limited, and Arafura Transnational Afro Limited, to convert money thought to be the proceeds of illegal activity.

According to the EFCC, the alleged offenses are punishable under section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended, and violate section 18 of the Act.

The commission claims that the alleged offenses were committed between 2019 and 2021 while Nwabuoku was the ministry of defense’s director of finance and accounts.

On May 20, 2022, the late former president Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as the federation’s acting accountant-general after Ahmed Idris was suspended due to an alleged N80 billion fraud.

But just a few weeks after being appointed, in July 2022, Nwabuoku was fired due to rumors that the EFCC was looking into him.

Before concluding its case, the EFCC called nine witnesses. On November 13, 2025, Omotosho ordered Nwabuoku to present his defense after rejecting his no-case submission.

On February 2, 2026, Nwabuoku began his defense, refuting the accusations and maintaining that he was not a signatory to some of the businesses purportedly connected to him.
