Monarch seeks faithful implementation of 6-3-3-4 system in education
The Orodije Okpe kingdom in Okpe local government area of Delta state, His Royal Majesty, Felix Mujekpero (rtd) has advocated the need for Nigeria to go back to the original concept of the 6-3-3-4 system of education in order to achieve sustainable technological growth and development.
Mujekpere, who was in the palace of the Obi of Owa in Ika North East local government area of the state when members of Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board (TVEB) paid advocacy/sensitization visit to the latter, said that faithful implementation of the 6-3-3-4 system of education would address the nation’s underdevelopment index.
According to him, until we go back to the original concept of the 6-3-3-4 system of education, Nigeria’s technological growth and development might remain a great mirage, adding that everybody must not go university, just as he stressed the need for people to acquire relevant skills that would enable them to become self-reliant.
“The problem with our educational system is that everybody wants to acquire university degree”, the Okpe monarch said, adding that Nigeria as a nation, should de-emphasize paper qualification by placing high premium on skill-based education.
Speaking further, he pointed out that the people with technical skills across the globe were the ones making money, saying “if you want to do POP and tiling in your house, you look for Tologese and Ghanaians because of their high level of competence in the POP and tiling vocation”.
Mujekpero who joined the Owa monarch, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Dr.) Emmanuel Efeizomor in commending members of TVEB for their advocacy and sensitization campaign to the Owa royal home, disclosed that technical and vocational education were very critical for technological development.
“We need more people with technical background that can drive sustainable technological development in Nigeria and this is where technical and vocational education becomes very important”, he stated, reiterating that “we must go back to the basis by embracing the original concept of the 6-3-3-4 system of education in order to mitigate poverty and unemployment in the country.”
