MNET Cancels ‘Channel O’ after 22 Years
New music stations have come out to beat “Channel O” so people are not really into it anymore. MNET has announced that the popular music station, Channel O, will be terminated by March 31 2015.
Channel O will hand over the baton to AfricaMagic, who are taking over as the new home of local music in Africa. You will have to tune to AfricaMagic World (DStv channel 155) to watch Channel O.
This decision was necessitated as a measure to strategize towards a streamlined and proficient approach that will enhance subscribers viewing experience –with regionalised content. In line with this, the channel will stop airing on DSTV/GOtv, channels 320 and 70 respectively.
“From 1 April, subscribers can tune into AfricaMagic World (GOtv channel 10 and DStv channel 155) to keep abreast of the best in West African music talent”, announcement from MNET.
Also, with Channel O’s cancellation, music content will be customized based on preferences that are relevant to each region on existing Africa Magic bands.
“The channel will get viewers into party-mode with an hour-long daily music show which will showcase the latest music videos made in Africa. Maisha Magic Swahili on GOtv channel 4 and DStv channel 158 will continue to support musicians from East Africa by promoting their music videos on various music shows,” the statement read further.
Channel O has been on for about 22 years. If the decision to shut the station down had come much later than March 31, Channel O would have been 23 years in the business of music entertainment. Wow!
