The Nigeria Army in Gombe on Monday foiled what would have been a major attack by fleeing members of the Boko Haram. In the encounter, a card reader was found and seized from the insurgents.
For about an hour, the soldiers engaged the insurgents in gun battle at a military check point in Dukku in the early hours of yesterday.
The insurgents on Saturday attacked villages in Dukku and Nafada councils and disrupted election processes killing no fewer than twenty persons, including INEC ad-hoc staff, policemen and civilians.
Parading one of the captured insurgents and three corpses of his colleagues at the 301 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army on Monday, spokesperson for the regiment, who insisted on anonymity, said the military succeeded in killing three of the insurgents and captured one alive.
Other items recovered from the insurgents are a Hilux van, a smart card reader machine belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), three boxes of assorted ammunition, one FM riffle and a pair of police uniforms, among others.
He said, “The success was recorded in the early hours of Monday, (00:30 GMT) when the gunmen attempted to attack a military check point at Dukku but our men overpowered them,” the spokesman said.
He urged the general public to remain calm, as the military was ready to protect lives and property in all parts of the state.
“We thank the general public for cooperating with us. If we continue to get useful information from the public, we will wipe out any person or group that tries to breach the peace of Gombe and Nigeria at large,” The spokesman said.
Meanwhile, there is relative peace in Gombe as people are going about their usual activities; but commercial activities are yet to pick up as markets and shops remain closed.
