Mild drama at Kano assembly as Sanusi faces fresh probe

There was a mild drama on the floor of Kano state House of Assembly as two petitions were brought before it on Wednesday, against the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi 11, accusing him of violating traditional, cultural and religious values.

After the reading of the petition by the Speaker, AbdulAziz Gafasa, a member representing Dala Constituency, Lawal Dala, observed that the letter shouldn’t have been brought before the House.

However, he was over-ruled by the speaker, who informed him, that his objection was belated and against Section (B) of the House rules since the petition has already been referred to a committee.

The petitioners, a civil society organization, the Kano Society for Promotion of Education and Culture and Mohammed Muktar Ja’en in their separate petitions called for a thorough investigation of the alleged abuse of office by the emir.

The petitioners further attached evidence of video clips with the petitions they raised against the Kano monarch.

During plenary, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Zubairu Masu tabled the petitions against the emir before the assembly, disclosing that the petitioners attached video clips, backing the allegations levelled against Emir Sanusi.

However, the House has expanded the membership of the five-man standing Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, to include the deputy speaker, chief whip and majority leader to look into the petitions and get back to the assembly within one week.

The Deputy Speaker, Hamisu Chidari was subsequently, appointed the chairman of the expanded eight-man committee.

All efforts made by journalists to get Emir Sanusi’s side of the story proved abortive as at the time of writing this report.
