Michael Jordan’s sneakers auctioned off for record 560,000 dollars
A pair of Michael Jordan’s worn and autographed basketball trainers were sold for a record 560,000 dollars at auction, Sotheby’s said on Sunday.
The basketball legend wore the red-and-white Nike “Air Jordan 1s” on court in 1985, according to Sotheby’s website, which describes the their condition as “good overall,” with “signs of game wear.”
Bidding for the sneakers, custom-made for Jordan in sizes 13 and 13.5, started more than a week ago in New York.
The buyer’s identity was not immediately known.
The final selling price was almost four times Sotheby’s initial estimate of 150,000 dollars.
It broke the previous auction record of 437,500 dollars paid for Nike’s 1972 “Moon Shoe” last year.

“The Nike ‘Air Jordan’ is one of the most iconic designs in the history of both streetwear and basketball, and is a key part of the origin of the Air Jordan brand for Nike,” Sotheby’s said.
Nike gave Jordan his own signature line of shoes and clothes in 1984, “the first time the brand did anything like this, and it paved the way for many of the player collaborations we now see,” the auction house added. (dpa)
