Following a fatal attack by gunmen believed to be members of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, tensions are high in the Agbamere Eha-Alumona community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
ESN is the militant wing of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
A community leader, Chief Ernest Maduka confirmed to journalists that the attackers targeted the family house of one Mr Okwor.
According to him, they claimed they were looking for Mr Donatus Okwor’s two children, identified as Mr. Kingsley Nnaemeka Okwor and Mr. Kenneth Chigozie Okwor.
The incident, which occurred on May 12, 2024, has left the community in devastation, Maduka said.
He disclosed that, “the ESN members have continued their forceful conscription of members, and once you refuse to identify with them, they brand you a saboteur.
“On the ill-fated day, they stormed our community in the dead of the night looking for their supposed members, Mr. Kingsley Nnaemeka Okwor and Mr. Kenneth Chigozie Okwor, who they claimed refused to show up for their nefarious activities.
“They ended up setting their family house ablaze; even the neighbouring compound was not spared.
“In fact, their mother who is a widow is yet to recover from the trauma.
“Fortunately, the two boys were out of town when the gunmen came; it would have been a different story.”
Meanwhile, the traumatized mother of Kingsley and Chigozie told our correspondent that “the deadly looking gunmen did not spare anything on their way.”
“I don’t know why they are after my children; is it by force to join their group? My children are part of those demanding for Biafra but they don’t want to join the armed group.
“Now, they have rendered us homeless; what have I done to deserve this cruel treatment,” she said in tears.
