May Day: Northern Govs Hail Workers, Harp on Accountability and Selflessness

The Chairman Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, on Wednesday, called on workers in the country to mark workers’ day celebration, by reflecting more on what they can do to fast-track national development.

Aliyu, who made this known through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Israel Ebije, said workers in the country must be innovative, exhibit high moral standards, in the area of accountability, and must place the interest of the country before theirs.

He said the role of workers is sacrosanct, in achieving Nigeria’s collective development aspiration, adding that more was expected from the Nigerian labour force, as the country was prepared to savour change of government, following the outcome of the last general election.

“Let me salute the resilience of Nigerian workers in the face of daunting work challenges. As a labour leader, in the 1980s, I am aware of the challenges faced by Nigerian workers. I am, indeed, happy Nigerian workers are capable of working under any terrain and that is why we will always show appreciation by marking a day set aside for workers.”

“Let me, however, urge our workers on the need to be more innovative, adhere to the principle of accountability and be ready to place the interest of Nigeria above self. Once every Nigerian worker understands that success of the country depends on every sector of the economy, she will, indeed, fare better economically, socially and politically.”

Aliyufurther said that the real change must come with transformation. He said the task of nation building should not be left in the hands of politicians alone, and that the task of nation-buildingwas a combined effort of everyone.
