Massive shake-up expected in APC as Adamu,Omisore resign party positions

By Felix Durumbah

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s National Working Committee (NWC) has postponed the National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings indefinitely, following the resignation of the party’s Chairman,Sen. Abdullahi Adamu.

The development is another gear shifted in the festering crisis within the party.

The said meetings were billed for July 10 and 11, but then were shelved to tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday. Now, no new dates have been given.

Aside Adamu, the party’s National Secretary, Sen. Iyiola Omisore, has also resigned.

Addressing newsmen today at the end of an emergency meeting of the NWC, APC acting National Chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari, said the meetings had been postponed.

He confirmed the exits of the party’s two leading officers.

Adamu was not present at the NWC meeting where there were Senator Kyari, Deputy National Chairman (North); Emma Enukwu Deputy National Chairman (South); Salihu Lukman, National Vice Chairman (North-West); National Vice Chairman (North-East), Salihu Mustapha; National Vice Chairman (North Central), Muazu Bawa; National Vice Chairman (South-West), Isaac Kekemeke; National Vice Chairman (South-East), Ejoroma Arodiogu and the Deputy National Secretary, Barr. Festus Fuanter.

Adamu was said to have resigned on Sunday and despatched his exit letter to President Bola Tinubu who was away in Kenya attending an African Union (AU) meeting. The President is back to the country now.

Adamu has had somewhat of a fractured relationship with elements in Tinubu’s camp.

Observers believed that it was just a question of time before events reached a head —-and exactly that has happened now.

During the APC presidential primary, alongside his NWC, Adamu chose to back the then Senate President Ahmed Lawan against Tinubu.

Speaking on a TV interview program recently, he owned up to not supporting Tinubu at the primary, but added that when Tinubu clinched the APC ticket, he and the NWC had to back him.

Adamu stressed that he should be given credit for his part in mobilizing the party’s machinery nationwide to ensure a Tinubu victory at the February 25,2023 presidential poll.

His statements showed clear signs of a man under tremendous pressure, seemingly by the victorious flank within the ruling party, the Tinubu camp.

Yesterday, it emerged that an APC group alleged plans by former Osun state governor,Chief Bisi Akande, to remove Adamu–a claim that was refuted by the Akande camp.

And now, Adamu has resigned. Obviously, there will be follow-up developments.

Daily Times is on hand to serve them to readers as they break.
